Rapists prey on drunk women

IVORY PARK - Two women were raped, in separate incidents, after leaving taverns in the early hours of 12 April.

In the one incident the victim and her friend had just left a tavern when three suspects pointed a firearm at them and took turns raping one of them in a passage that joins the Riverside section in Ext 13.

In the second case, the victim was raped at knifepoint in Ebony Park at 2am by three suspects in an open veld while walking home from a tavern.

Ivory Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Neldah Sekgobela said the station is appealing to women to avoid staying in taverns until late. “In total, four rape cases involving drunk women from taverns were reported this past weekend. We urge women to take care and avoid walking home drunk at night or in the early morning.”

Sekgobela warned that if police find anyone wandering the streets while under the influence of alcohol, and drinking, the person will be arrested and charged for drinking in public.
