Unity pupil listens up

BROADACRES - For Unity College pupil Pontso Mangoene the ability to hear was not a given, but rather a well-deserved gift.

Unity College is a Broadacres-based school for pupils with delayed scholastic ability.

According to Michelle Kirk of Unity College, Mangoene desperately needed hearing aids because there were days when she would be home alone without assistance. “For a hearing enabled person, one cannot begin to imagine what it’s like living without one’s hearing,” Kirk said.

Unity’s speech therapist Vicky Macrides brought together audiologist Janine Schnugh and Oticon Hearing Aid’s Margot Christie to turn Mangoene’s life around.

All Mangoene’s consultations and the making of brand new hearing aids were done at no charge.

“It is always wonderful to see how people still do care and can be so kind to one another for the greater good,” Kirk said.
