Man drowns during baptism

BUCCLEUCH - What was supposed to be a significant moment for a church baptism turned into the death of a 30-year-old man.

According to Emergency Management Services spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, the incident took place on 15 February in the Jukskei River.

“We received a call to remove the man, who had drowned during the baptism ceremony,” he said.

Mulaudzi added that despite the tragic event, congregants wanted to continue with the baptism ceremony, but the Metro police were called in to force it to stop.

He stressed the need for caution when performing baptisms and said the management services had done training to advise churches on precautionary measures they can take during such ceremonies.

“We advise churches to make use of safety ropes during baptisms, as they are able to assist should a drowning incident take place,” he said.

Additionally, Mulaudzi cautioned churches to refrain as much as possible from using rivers, opting rather for pools, which were safer.
