Joburg in January

JOBURG - Joburg City is packing in a range of things for you to do in January.

A musical legend, Abigail Kubeka, is a child of the Sophiatown jazz generation and is sure to captivate the audience at The Orbit jazz club in Joburg with the sounds of times past on 24 January.

The 7th Johannesburg International Mozart Festival opens on the weekend of January 24 with two Viennese New Year concerts led by the Johannesburg Festival Orchestra at Linder Auditorium in Joburg. This year’s festival is themed Masquerade and includes chamber, symphony and solo performances as well as silent film nights at the Bioscope cinema from 29 to 30 January. The festival ends on 8 February.

Joburg now has literally dozens of trendy food and design weekend markets to enjoy including Market on Main and Neighbourgoods market. From super-hip to family-friendly, there’s something for everyone. All of Joburg’s most popular markets are back open for business with only The Sheds@1 Fox remaining on a summer break until 23 January. When they reopen, they will offer extended drinking hours on Thursdays and Fridays and live music every Sunday afternoon and Thursday evening.

The inner-city swimming pools tour is the perfect way to explore the city on a hot summer’s day, while learning about Joburg’s turbulent history along the way. This fun tour takes in inner-city rooftops, Olympic-sized public pools and trendy pool decks in the hippest new urban neighbourhoods on 24 January.

Luncheon at the View and guided tour on 25 January pays a special visit to Thomas Cullinan’s gorgeous Parktown mansion, and includes a tour by Joburg Heritage of the historic home which is now used by the Transvaal Scottish Regiment, followed by a lunch.
