Murdered woman’s family friend speaks out

VORNA VALLEY - The woman who was murdered in what looks like a house robbery on John Uys in Vorna Valley has been identified.

A Facebook group page named “Ask Nanima?” posted their condolences to the family of Thohira Mitha on the day of her death, 10 December.

According to a close source to the family, Mitha was a 28-year-old Vodacom employee.

“Her father is a priest and Mitha was a good girl,” said the source. The source also stated that he did not believe that Mitha’s murder was as random as the police have alluded. “Why did they leave the maid and kill her? It’s stupid,” he declared.

The Midrand police have stated that Mitha was killed between the hours of 11am and 12am. She had been in her home, at Vista Villa complex, with her domestic worker when they heard a knock at the door. According to the domestic helper’s statement to the police, Mitha answered the door. She saw three men at the doorway, they told her to go back to her work while they spoke to Mitha.

It is unclear whether she witnessed Mitha’s death, but the police said she was receiving trauma counselling and would be taken to the Midrand police for further questioning.

Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela said Mitha was strangled to death. “The robbers took two laptops, a safe that contained a firearm and earphones,” he said.

“Police are still busy with investigations,” he said.

Police could be seen leaving the site and although the complex has CCTV footage for the entrance at the gate, the police are still hoping to find a lead on it.
