Accidents waiting to happen on Modderfontein Road

Janet Schofield writes:

If the Metro police really want to see reckless driving, they should wait on the corner of Swart and Modderfontein roads on weekday mornings from 6.30am.

They would be impounding 18 taxis every 10 minutes.

I am a volunteer at Kitty & Puppy Haven in Modderfontein Road and I arrive there every morning at 6.30am. Seven weeks ago, construction to upgrade the road started along an 8km stretch. The contractors saw fit to grade the hard shoulders of the road, creating a drop of about a third of a metre from the tar surface. They did not put any ramps at the entrances to the various properties, making it impossible for residents to get in or out, unless they used the hard shoulder all the way from Swart Road.

However, that means facing oncoming taxis using the graded shoulder as a fast lane passing the traffic on the tar surface. This is what nightmares are made of. You have no choice about using this route to access your property but you will have to contend with convoys of up to 10 taxis barrelling towards you at about 80km/h.
