Another one bites the dust

KYALAMI - The hip-hop music festival Pop Bottles has been denied by Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe.

The event was to be hosted at the Kyalami Sports and Function Centre on 7 December.

Deppe strongly appealed against the festival. She stated the venue was insufficient for the crowd turnout. In previous years, the festival has attracted hundreds of people causing mayhem and raucous happenings on a very busy R55 road.

Lee-Ann Gama of Eyethu Events has stated as event organisers they will be responsible for the safety and security of the event and will ensure all Johannesburg Operations Committee approvals and applications are done.

She verified the event is hosted on behalf of DSTV channel VUZU, and the festival is aimed at showcasing some of the best local djs. She added that the event happens every three months all over Johannesburg, and this will be the last event for the year.

Additionally, Greenstar managing member of the festival, Lance Crouch has said, “December’s Pop Bottles showcase is the last of five events on the annual Pop Bottles calendar and is a great way to round up our best year yet and will be hosted at the Kyalami Sports & Functions Centre.”

However, Deppe has stated as a councillor for the area she cannot approve this event, “The centre is not zoned to have an event of this magnitude, I unfortunately cannot give my approval to this event in this area, it is in the middle of a residential area with two retirement villages are in close range of this stand,” said Deppe.

Despite this, tickets have already been out on sale and can be bought via Computicket at R150.

Deppe is standing by her word regarding this issue. As a councillor, she needs to look out for the best interests of the residents that live in the area she stated.
