Beware of fake prophets

MIDRAND - A strange case of common robbery was opened at Midrand Police Station on 11 November.

A young woman was walking along Alsatian Road in Glen Austin when she had her tablet and ID book stolen from her.

The woman, who is also a Midrand Graduate Institute student, said she was on her way to class at about 11.39am when a man approached her and asked for directions. As she did not know the place he was talking about, she could not give directions.

The man then asked a seemingly nearby stranger. Instead of giving directions, the man started prophesying to the young lady. She said as she was listening to the old man’s prophecy, the man who was looking for directions grabbed her bag and ran away.

Constable Matome Tlamela of the police said such cases were not uncommon. “Community members should be aware of such scams .This case takes us back to basic principles of people avoiding talking to strangers,” she said,

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects is advised to call the Midrand police.

“Police are still investigating and we hope to bring the suspects to book,” said Tlamela.

Details: 011 347 1600/1626.
