Company awards schools recycling efforts

MIDRAND - Amalgamated Beverage Industries (ABI), the soft drink division of South African Breweries, will award over R250 000 in prizes to the best performing schools, educators and partners in its schools recycling programme.

The company’s corporate affairs manager, Itumeleng Matlaila said over the past three years the programme saw over 350 000 pupils and 11 000 teachers benefit from their efforts, making it a key recycling drive in south Africa. “The recycling programme not only provides a waste management solution in schools, but teaches children to become accountable for their environment. More than 650 tonnes of recyclable material have been collected by participating schools so far.”

The awards ceremony will be held at ABI’s Midrand Manufacturing plant on 18 November. Prizes will be given to schools which have shown great dedication to recycling. The schools will be judged not only on the waste volumes collected, but also on the involvement of their community, innovation and motivation.

The best recycling school will win R50 000, first runner up receives R30 000 and second runner up will receive R20 000. The top 10 eco-champions in the schools will receive R3 500 each.
