Maths Buddies does it again in Tembisa

TEMBISA - The My Maths Buddy One Book One Learner project presented copies of the My Maths Buddy dictionary to pupils of Reagile Primary School in Tembisa.

The “How to Use My Maths Buddy” workshops were made possible by Phumulani Mall in Clayville.

The workshops took place from 22 to 24 October.

The graduation ceremony was held on 31 October. Teachers and pupils were then presented with a certificate of participation.

A 100 copies of the book were donated and all Grade 6 pupils participated in the workshops to learn how to use them. Teachers, who already had previously received copies of the book, participated in a teacher workshop where they were shown how to use the book in their lessons.

Philippa Roborg-Sondergaard, public relations manager and media consultant for the project said, “We highlight the value and purpose of mathematics as a language. The dictionary increases the users understanding of the mathematics language by helping them with clear definitions and examples.”

She also said, “Schools where the One Book One Learner project has delivered the workshop are showing improvement in the subject.”

In attendance for the graduation was Luyolo Mdlazi, the centre manager for Phumulani Mall. He addressed the children of the school in his speech and encouraged them to use the dictionary and to take mathematics as a subject as it is vital for their career choices.

“South Africa needs young people to take up professions such as engineers and doctors, and mathematics is an important subject to be able to do this,” he said.
