Chef students burn out

MIDRAND - Two students who won a R40 000 scholarship at Culinary Passions School of Hospitality have dropped out.

The school is run by chef, Citrum Khumalo and is based in Midrand.

Student, Phumi Jiyane said the treatment she received was not appropriate, and the uniforms and other requirements became expensive.

“After a few disturbing incidents I decided to leave,” said Jiyane. “My reasons are personal.”

Fellow student, Thandisile Msawuli said he left because he could not afford it. “We were told that the scholarship will cover everything, but then chef Khumalo expected us to pay for uniforms, a knife set and exams fees which amounted to R2 500 each,” said Msawuli. “I could not raise over R7 000. My family could not afford it.”

Khumalo said the two did not comply with the terms of the scholarship. He explained, “Jiyane and Msawuli left because they thought they will be given R40 000 cash. The scholarship also required that they provided their own transport to the school and buy uniforms.

“The two students were given an opportunity for education, they then expect to be paid to get an education.”

He said the two students who dropped out “were hardly at school”.

“Our school operates very professionally and it is a skills training that can be taxing on anyone who is not as committed to be a chef,” he said. “A lot of people drop out. Four years ago we took 27 students, but only 14 stayed in the programme to the end.”
