A heated reply to Water Wastage article

In response to the article Leaking water worries some, week ending 3 October 2014, Leonardo Biccari writes to Johannesburg Water spokesperson Millicent Kabwe.

Although you are correct in stating that air needs to be vented or bled out of the system, this should be done after the repair is complete, not before or during!

This is normally done by opening a fire hydrant at the highest point and leaving it open until a steady flow of water is achieved and then closing it. In this case, the valve was left open for much longer than required for a venting exercise.

I respectfully suggest you investigate this wasteful practice rather than attempt to justify it by inaccurate statements. You should think carefully before assuming the consumer is ignorant. You may find some of us are more knowledgeable and better qualified than you.
