Organisations and police bring the elderly and youth together on Heritage Day

MIDRAND - City of Johannesburg Social Work Department Region A, Rabie Ridge Police and non-governmental organisations brought the youth and the elderly together to celebrate Heritage Day at Rabie Ridge Community hall.

The hosts invited the elderly from Ubuntu Old Age Hone, Golden Senior Citizens and Reagona Old Age Home to share their knowledge on the importance of South African heritage with the youth from Rabie Ridge. Police Constable Jacob Nhlongo chaired the event which was themed Heritage versus Semanjemanje Substance Awareness and Positive Lifestyle.

South African National Council on Alcoholism And Drug Dependence representative Tshepiso Mabuela and City of Johannesburg Social Development representative Lily Ramakgoakgoa encouraged the elderly to continue to advise the youth against drug and alcohol abuse.

“We need the guidance of the adults to show young people the right way of doing things,” they said. Other messages of encouragement came from Florence Makgatho from Hlakanang, a non governmental organisation. Makgatho said, “Young people can learn a lot from older generation, but they have to decide to listen and respect their heritage.”

Other organisations present were Local Drug Action Committee and the Pastors Forum. Amajiji Ampela, a cultural dance, group sang and danced for the audience; pupils from Dr Mathole Primary School presented poems about culture, and Rabie Ridge knowledge Group and Ivory Park Youth Drama were also in attendance.
