MEC’s office in meeting to discuss protesters demands

RABIE RIDGE - Residents from Mayibuye flats protested on 2 September over rental housing issues.

A resident Thembelihle Buthelezi spoke to Midrand Reporter. “Residents are complaining of high rental prices they have to pay in those flats and want the municipality to intervene,” she said.

Rabie Ridge station commander Colonel Phostick Maoto said four people had been arrested for public violence. “We have detained them at the police station,” he said. “We will continue to arrest anyone who protests without asking for permission from the police.”

Information was still sketchy as the office of the MEC for housing was still meeting with affected parties in Mayibuye.

MEC for housing spokesperson Motsamai Motlhaolwa said, “The office of the MEC and officials are currently meeting with residents to try and resolve the matter. We will also involve the Rental Housing Tribunal on this issue of rental housing.”
