Body found in tavern rubble

HALFWAY HOUSE - The body of a man was found in the rubble of the collapsed tavern, Ipi Tombi on 12 July.

Midrand police Station Commander Colonel Steven Moodley said a security guard patrolling the area discovered the body in the rubble while he was patrolling the site.

“Only the head of the body was visible,”  said Moodley.

Midrand police and emergency services were called to the scene at around 9.15am on 12 July.

Moodley said a search and rescue group stabilised the building and removed the body. He said the identity of the man was unknown.

Moodley said the rescue operation then searched through the rubble. The search would continue on 14 July.

Moodley explained security guards had been patrolling the site of the tavern since it collapse in a gas explosion at 2am on 23 June.

The explosion was heard throughout Midrand, as far as Rabie Ridge. To read more about the explosion, click here
