Chess prize giving for Midrand schools

MIDRAND - Midrand chess club held a school chess league prize-giving at Halfway House Primary School.

The club’s president Kris Eale said, “The pupils who have been given medals today have shown a great competitive spirit throughout the tournament.”

Johanneburg Metro Chess president, Shanks Naidoo said parents must nurture children’s love for chess. “Chess is a sport that grows a child’s ability to stay focused. Most of the chess players are very disciplined too.”

Hillkruin Montessori School was the Midrand Chess Schools League winners. They were awarded a floating trophy, gold medals and R1 800. Halfway House Primary School came second, and received silver medals and R1 300. Third place, bronze medals and R1 000.00 went to Summit College. Sponsors, Century 21 Properties Midrand were present at the prize-giving, and the Reddy family provided food on the day while Spur Midrand sponsored 50 meal vouchers.

  •  Siyabulela Mgijima – 2014 Best Girl player.
  •  Zander Arjunan – 2014 Youngest Player.

Individual school winner:

  •  Thabiso Mokhatsane – Best Player Halfway House Primary School.
  •  Bradley Buys – Best Player Reddam House.
  •  Nyiko Mabuza – Best Player Summit College.
  •  Thenny Mafema – Best Player Sagewood College.
  •  Kiaran Reddy – Best Player Hillkruin Montessori School.
