Fashion awards celebrate African people and the youth

MIDRAND - The Port Harcourt Fashion Awards were hosted at Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand.

Point to Point Connections owner and former Miss GP 2011, Sandi Maqoqa said, “The fashion awards are a way to encourage the blending of African cultures and business ideas. At present we have representatives from South Africa and Nigeria, but we hope to grow the concept and open it to other African countries.”

She explained that the awards are held in June to commemorate youth month and celebrate the talent of young people in the world of fashion. The young people who took part in the fashion awards were chosen after a talent search project in Alexandra in 2013. The talented young people ranged from models, singers and performers from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Maqoqa said that the awards are a great partnership between two countries, furthering cultural exchange. She added, “We are promoting diversity and promoting African synergy.”

Nigerian-based Supreme magazine events and content executive director Pamela Daniel said the awards are a great way to encourage youngsters. She added, “We will continue to nurture and celebrate talented young people. The awards started in 2013 and we hope to continue honouring young talent.”
