Suspects arrested for perjury and armed robbery

MIDRAND - Police arrested a man (52) for perjury on 17 March at 5.40pm.

Midrand police communications officer Constable Matome Tlamela said, “Detective Constable Lekhuleni Japhta arrested the man after he reported a false carjacking case at Midrand police.”

She said the complainant had just left a bank after drawing R30 000 when a woman dropped money next to the complainant and told him he had dropped his money. “Suddenly the female suspect quickly picked up the money and told the complainant that the money does not belong to him and they must get a safe place to go and share the money,” explains Tlamela.

The woman and the complainant were then approached by two armed men driving in a white bakkie who pretended to be police officers. They stole the R30 000.

“They ordered the female suspect and the complainant to get into the bakkie. The suspects told the complainant that they were taking them to dog unit cells and [drove] in the Rabie Ridge direction. While on their way, the complainant managed to open the door while the car was moving and rolled to the ground. The suspects stopped and abandoned the vehicle on Dale Road in President Park and ran on foot,” said Tlamela.

On the same day, the suspects asked their friend to report a false carjacking case at Midrand police and they promised to pay him.

“After the case was reported, the police were tracing the vehicle and they found the owner of the vehicle was a pensioner. He was interviewed and he reported that his vehicle was not hijacked; he [lent] it to his friend. Lekhuleni called in the man who reported the carjacking case. The man was interviewed and during the interview he stated that he was he was asked by his friends to report a false case and they [would] pay him.”

He further stated that they used the vehicle to rob people in Midrand. The man was immediately arrested for perjury. Due to the information that the perjury suspect gave and the owner of the vehicle, the police managed to arrest the two suspects for armed robbery. All suspects will appear at court soon.
