Residents say JMPD set up speed traps illegally

CARLSWALD - A Midrand Reporter reader complained on the Looklocal Facebook page about speed traps on Walton Road.

The reader said, “Metro cops sometimes set illegal speed traps on Walton Road, between 7th and Neptune. Yet, there are no speed prosecuting signs in that area.”

Angeline Ncube, who works for a company on 5th Road, confirmed that Metro police sometimes set traps along the road. “A month ago, as I was driving to work, Metro police also stopped me and asked for my licence. I was puzzled because I had not been speeding.” Ncube added that she had not seen any speed traps recently, the last time she saw them was a month ago.

Johannesburg Metro Police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said that Metro officials are allowed to put up speed traps using cameras on roads without speed prosecuting signs.

“[Metro] officials can set up [speed traps] on inner routes and in residential areas to check that motorists are keeping to the 60km/ph speed limit. Anyone driving above the set speed limit on those routes is definitely going to be stopped and fined.”

Mamonyane added that motorists often complain that Metro police jump out of bushes and catch motorists off guard. “If a person is driving within the set speed limit, they will not be worried about being caught off guard. Many people who complain would have been speeding.”

She emphasised that Metro police are there to make sure the roads are safe, and motorists must stick to the rules of the road to avoid being fined or pulled over.
