A successful Jukskei annual Spruit Clean Up this World Cleanup Day

World Cleanup Day is an annual global social action programme that addresses the issue of solid waste, including marine debris.

Over 30 local residents and stakeholders came together at the Jukskei River to celebrate World Cleanup Day by participating in the river’s annual Spruit Clean Up.

The event, which took place on September 16, saw residents of Glenferness and the surrounding areas collect over 55 bags of waste along the river.

The initiative was supported by several organisations, including the Bontle ke Tlahgo cooperatives based in Diepsloot, Peaceful Scapes Landscaping, The Rotary Club of Kyalami, Imvelo, Kyalami Corner, and Ward 94 councillor David Foley.

Throughout the event, locals and representatives from some of the participating organisations, such as Daphney Teffo, Debbie Smit, Kristin Kallesen, Sifiso Shongwe, and Sonya Bohnsack, underscored the importance of keeping the earth clean.

They emphasised that human actions have a direct impact on the environment and that more needs to be done to reduce pollution and waste.

Furthermore, they highlighted the need for education and awareness about the significance of protecting the planet.

Teffo explained that the group chose to focus on cleaning up the Jukskei River because it is an urban river that starts in Johannesburg City Centre and ends up at Hartebeesport Dam.

According to Teffo, there is an abundance of plastic waste in the river, which poses a significant threat to wildlife and people who use the water. Ultimately, the waste ends up in the ocean and harms marine life.

The group urged people to dispose of their waste properly, recycle, and consider where their waste is going. By doing so, they would ensure a clean environment for everyone.

Teffo expressed her appreciation to all those who participated in the cleanup, as well as the various sponsors who supported the initiative.
