Grade 7 Noordwyk Primary School learners host career and entrepreneurs days

Grade 7 EMS teachers, Sandra Mdaka belives it’s important to teach learners to be self-employed, be equipped with business and economic management skills at their young age

It was a busy day on the premises of the Noordwyk Primary School as the school hosted its annual Career Day Exhibition and Entrepreneurs Day.

This happened on September 1 when Grade 7 learners came dressed up in what they want to be when they grow up in the morning session.

Future legal practitioners Gabriella Simmers, Unathi Machaba and Iviwe Magobiane.

Career day coordinator Miranda Nonhlanhla Ndukulu said the aim was to simulate the young learners so that they can be exposed to an exciting working environment.
“They need to know from now what is it that they want to be shortly in terms of their profession or career because as of Grade 10, the learners start choosing subjects that will propel them into their desired careers. Therefore, we want them to know and understand a workplace, what they must study and where will they study,” said Ndzukulu.
She warned learners that the profession they chose must be aligned with their personalities, characters and interests.

Shortly after the Career Day, the Entrepreneurs Day began. Future business owners and entrepreneurs lined up their stalls at the school assembly where they were joined by other learners and teachers. They sold various products, including snacks.

Economic Management Science teacher and coordinator of the entrepreneurs day, Sandra Mdakad said it was about teaching Grade 7 learners business skills.
“The purpose of this day is to fight the high unemployment rate in South Africa. It’s important to teach learners to be self-employed and be equipped with business and economic management skills at a young age. We also want to make sure that our learners do not contribute to the high crime rate to fend for themselves when they grow up,” said Mdaka.
She said before the day, the Grade 7 learners conducted research around the school asking teachers and other young learners which products would sell like hot vetkoek on a cold winter’s day.
