Midrand SPCA hosts a successful AGM in Glen Austin despite poor attendance

Midrand SPCA treasurer, Brenda Lucas said, “We are calling on the public to please support your local SPCA."

The Midrand SPCA is optimistic that some of its long-overdue projects will be fulfilled in this financial year.

The animal welfare organisation wants to upgrade its clinic, dog runs and farmyard in the current year. However, to achieve this, they need public support and funding to make these projects possible.
Speaking at their AGM, at the Ambrosia Hall in Glen Austin, treasurer Brenda Lucas told delegates that several projects were in the pipeline and needed to be urgently, but financial constraints have prevented these from taking place.

“We are calling on the public to please support your local SPCA. The work that we conduct is to the benefit of the animals in Midrand. It was noted as the society we had several projects in the pipeline and we are grateful to have been able to install our inverter and solar during the financial year which has alleviated the burden on load-shedding, allowing us to operate and attend to emergencies,” said Lucas.

She said the SPCA featured a presentation on the incredible amount of work conducted in the past financial year by the society inspectors, management and their staff. Lucas thanked their staff for the great work done to positively impact the lives of many animals.

The Audit Financials statements were also presented and indicated that the society had a deficit of R368 000 for this financial year ending March 31.

Lucas said despite the financial constraints, the SPCA continued to support the public and attend to all cruelty complaints, emergencies and rescues.
“We are here to serve the animals and the public and while we are a non-profit organisation, it is concerning that we continue to run at a financial loss monthly which is not sustainable if we want to keep our doors open. We wish to encourage the public to please support our SPCA because the work that we do is not for ourselves. We are there to enforce the Animals Protection Act and to be a voice for the animals of Midrand. Without the support of the public and corporate companies, we will seize to exist.”

The management committee was voted in for the new financial year and the members are, Joe Burrows as chairperson, Steven Johnstone as vice chairperson, secretary Jess Prinsloo, Sue Klingenberg as a committee member and Lucas as the treasurer.
