Midrand High netball coach hopes to further her studies

“In primary school I refused to go to netball practice because I was convinced the teacher hates me. In Grade 8, for the first time ever I played for the A team," says Midrand High School teacher and netball coach.

Klaryn Janse van Vuuren is a 26-year-old Midrand High School teacher who is an enthusiastic netball player and coach.

Janse van Vuuren said just for fun, she and her husband played action netball together with a group of friends. And during the cricket season, she spends most of her time on the side of the field supporting her husband.

Aspiring netball coach and umpire Klaryn Janse van Vuuren is in possession.

Janse van Vuuren plays as a wing attack or sometimes goal attack and had previously played as goal defence.
“I recently got selected for the Bulls Super League [action netball] open ladies’ B team… I’ve had great opportunities this year with Gauteng School’s netball in the U14 Winter Netball Games… I was the manager of the team and an umpire,” she said.

Janse van Vuuren added she did not only help her team win gold but also managed to get her South African Schools Netball umpire grading.
“I’m planning on getting even better grades and eventually coaching Gauteng teams and winning more gold medals. As for my professional academic side, I’m still saving money to do my honours degree in teaching.”

Klaryn Janse van Vuuren only started playing netball in Grade 8 and now is an avid lover of the sport.

Talking about her journey in netball, she said, “In primary school, I refused to go to netball practice because I was convinced the teacher hated me. In Grade 8, for the first time, I played for the A team. In Grade 9, I started playing for my high school’s first netball team and played first team ever since.
“I then knew I deserved to be in that team, not only in that year but all the previous years since Grade 9 because I worked hard to be there. I still encourage my netball girls today to work hard for what they want because things don’t just come easy for everyone.”
