Waterfall City Athletic Club urge more runners to join them

"We have been very busy during this July race activation month, inviting the public to join our Saturdays training runs where we run in groups creating a fun vibe," said the club's spokesperson.

The Waterfall City Athletic Club hopes they will achieve their goal of having 5 000 runners participating in their annual half marathon.

In a bid to achieve this milestone and surpass last year’s numbers, the club has held various activations on Waterfall City’s various roads, including Allandale Road, where they distributed flyers to motorists.

They also did this by targeting shoppers at the Mall of Africa, who have collaborated with the club, together with Attaacq, Waterfall Management Company, SA Home Loans and PPS.

The club’s spokesperson Andiswa Gqamana said they were targeting 5000 runners and walkers this year for the 5km fun run, 10km race and 21.1km half marathon distances.
“In 2022, the target was 2000 people. We exceeded that target and had 3300 enthusiastic entrants, we are hopeful that they will join us again this year. We have been very busy during this July race activation month, inviting the public to join our Saturday training runs where we run in groups creating a fun vibe. We have also been attending different park runs informing and inviting park run attendees to join us for our upcoming race,” said Gqamana.

She said they have been actively present at the Mall of Africa, which happens to be the start venue of the race, handing out flyers and telling the public about the race. The event is scheduled for August 6 and will be the third edition of the marathon.

Gqamana said the purpose of distributing the race flyer is to reach a wider audience and get as many people as possible to know about and register for the race.
“As Waterfall City Athletics Club, we place a lot of emphasis on developing young talent. Not only will the race benefit the club’s development team, but the allocation of the prize money to junior athletes also reinforces the ethos of the club to developing young athletes. The prize money has more than doubled compared to 2022 and has allowed additional categories to be included. We are looking at a total of R74 000,” she added.

Gqamana said they recognise and value the significance of running for their members and the public.
