The 2023 South African Open Disc Golf Championship took place at Inanda Country Base from 16 to 17 June.

In the amateur divisions, Paige Bezuidenhout took home the win in the FA4 division, holding off Sune Dreyer in a sudden-death playoff. In the men’s MA2 division, the win went to Jacques Bezuidenhout, while in the MA1 division, victory went to Jandre Potgieter from Centurion.
In the female pro division, defending champion Rebekah Botes withstood the challenge of Sian Schroeder to retain her title, with Hannah Eppel finishing in third.

The most excitement occurred in the men’s pro division. Defending champion Alex Meulenbeld from Kyalami, Illovo-based Mark Schroeder and US visitor Kaiser Shen from Baltimore were evenly matched throughout, with the lead changing hands several times during the final round.
After Schroeder narrowly missed a putt on hole 20, Meulenbeld and Shen also finished on a score of 18 under par which meant that another sudden-death play-off was required. In the first playoff hole, the spectacular hole 3 across the Inanda lake, Meulenbeld placed his drive to within 2m of the target basket, which Shen had no answer to, thereby claiming the title for the third year in a row and with it the winner’s cheque of R2 000.

Bart Meulenbeld, chairman of Disc Golf South Africa said, “It was a fabulous weekend of disc golf at Inanda with a record number of entrants including 13 women. Once again, the improvement in the skill levels of all players was evident, which is exciting for the future. The Inanda course was in magnificent shape, with several changes implemented to provide additional challenges for the players.”
