70 Midrand Striders members to participate in Comrades Marathon

"The preparations of all athletes is never a linear experience, but a journey of success and failure that needs to be turned into lessons learned," Lwazi Khumalo.

Midrand Striders members prepared for a long time for the 2023 Comrades Marathon.

The 96th Comrades Marathon will take place on June 5 in Pietermaritzburg. According to Midrand Striders chairperson, Lwazi Khumalo, the Comrades Marathon is the largest and oldest ultra-marathon.

The team members prepared for the 2023 Comrades Marathon when they participated in the Om Die Dam Ultra-Marathon, the Two Oceans Marathon, and their annual race held on May 21.

“We took on big races since the year started, to ensure that the team is well prepared for the big day,” said Khumalo.

“The training period has been one of the shortest periods we ever had as last year’s marathon was in August.”

The Midrand Striders team said they saw it coming when they took 32 top positions at the Om Die Dam Ultra-Marathon earlier this year.

Lisa Krumniki, said her preparation journey was hard, but she’s happy to be amongst the 70 members participating in the Comrades Marathon.

“My preparations for the Comrades Marathon started a little later than anticipated, I have been fortunate to have had five smooth months of training with only a couple of training runs lost due to illnesses,” said Krumniki.

In previous years, about 100 team members would participate in the Comrades Marathon, but due to Covid-19, it has been lower. Khumalo said she is happy with how numbers are coming back together.

Although this year’s race is the shortest down run 2,2km shorter than last year Khumalo said there is no such thing as an easy Comrades Marathon.

” We are very proud of our runners, especially those going for their green numbers and our novices. All the commitment to push through with their training, no matter what the circumstances are, is finally paying off.”
