Perjury suspect arrested by Midrand police denied bail

"Police will not waste resources which some need for real crimes that indeed were committed," warns Midrand Police Station Commander.

A 24-year-old male suspect, who was arrested by the Midrand Police Station for perjury, defeating the ends of justice and theft, was denied bail by the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court.

The suspect allegedly played victim after wrongfully claiming to have been robbed of iPhones worth R100 000.
Acting station spokesperson Sergeant Angelina Selowa said the suspect, who is a driver for a courier company, went to the station to open an armed robbery case on January 18.

In his statement, the suspect claimed ‘to have been blocked by an unknown white sedan car and its occupants, who are also not known, pointed a firearm at him and robbed him of iPhone cellphones’.
“The investigating officer, Detective Ronny Mkhari attached to Midrand SAPS Detectives, conducted his investigation and viewed the CCTV footage at a Business Park in Kyalami, where he claimed the crime took place. And on the footage, the driver, who was the complainant in armed robbery case, could be seen handing over the parcels.”

He was arrested on February 7, made a brief court appearance where his bail application was denied. He will appear in court again on May 5.

Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso commended the commitment and investigative tool that Mkhari used to discover the truth that led to the arrest. “Such community members are going to be arrested and police will not waste resources that are needed for real crimes that indeed were committed. As Midrand SAPS, we will request the court to impose harsher sentences to such criminals to learn the lesson, which will also deter others.”
Tsotsotso warns the community about lying under oath about a crime that never took place.
