Community comes together to help the restoration of power at Midrand SPCA

The SPCA was at its wit's end with the continued electricity issues as from February 18 to 24 it encountered electrical faults with no end in sight.

Thanks to members of the community and Ward 92 councillor Charmaine Ngoepe, Midrand SPCA was able to keep operating during a power outage that lasted a week.

The SPCA was at its wit’s end due to the continued electricity issues from February 18 to 24.
This was a huge blow for the organisation as all their surgeries had to be done off-site. They had no water pressure and were spending
R1 500 on fuel daily for their existing generator just to keep the phones and internet going.

General manager Pam Pretorius said during the outage, Eskom technicians visited the premises and told her that an underground cable needed to be replaced and they did not have the equipment to replace it at that time.

“We did not believe that we will be able to continue operating like that for much longer as it was costing us a large amount of money which we don’t have and no resolution was being found,” said Pretorius.

After asking for assistance from the public, they received another generator from Caren Sutherns from Geoffrey Sutherns Attorneys along with a donation for fuel, and a second generator and fuel from a community member Alan Seccombe.

In the meantime, Ngoepe also pushed Eskom to attend to this matter. A technician was sent and according to Pretorius, the power was restored after they were connected to a different line.

“We are uncertain as to whether this is a permanent or temporary solution, but for now, our power has been restored,” said Pretorius.

Pretorius added the additional generators would ensure that they could remain functional during load-shedding when their inverter couldn’t handle the load.
“We thank every individual and company that has stepped up. These funds are being used to keep our generators going and to cover some of the costs that we incurred over these past seven days.”
