Midrand SPCA advocates against illegal snares

Earlier this year, the team headed out to Bullfrog Pan in Glen Austin with inspectors, several SPCA staff, and some community members to do a sweep of the area for snares.

Recently, the Midrand SPCA team found a dog outside their premises which had a snare around its leg that had severed half of its leg.

The SPCA stated in a statement that they suspect the dog got caught in a snare near the pan where the organisation is constantly trying to combat this cruel act. Unfortunately, the dog could not be saved as the leg would have required a costly amputation.

“We continue to advocate against the use of illegal snares as so many innocent animals suffer due to these. As a community, we need to stand together and help eradicate and educate against these death traps,” said the SPCA.

Snare hunting is one of the cruellest means of hunting as many of the animals caught in them are left to die a slow and painful death, from injuries, starvation, and a lack of water.

Earlier this year, the team headed out to Bullfrog Pan in Glen Austin with inspectors, several SPCA staff, and some community members to do a sweep of the area for snares.

The team covered a vast area in removing several snares under difficult conditions. “The area is covered in bushes, and you have to really concentrate on seeing the thin snare lines in the thick bushes. Sadly, we also found the carcass of a hare that suffered a horrendous death.”

In their fight against snares over the past few months, the SPCA has previously highlighted that snares are indiscriminate and kill everything that gets caught in them. This includes both domestic animals and wildlife. “Some animals manage to escape the snares and, in many cases, die days later due to their injuries that caused an infection or they starve to death as their injuries prevent them from catching food.”

The SPCA thanked the Glen Austin community for their assistance and its team for never giving up on preventing cruelty to all animals.
