Waterfall City Athletic Club hold run to keep member’s memory alive

“Thank you to everyone who pitched and made this a beautiful memorial run in honour of our brother Rassie," the running club said in their Facebook post.

The year 2023 started on a sombre note for the Waterfall City Athletic Club following the untimely passing of one of their longer-serving members, Lucas Raseruthe.

Raseruthe, affectionately known as ‘Rassie’ passed on December 29, aged 41.
His passing hinted at a bleak New Year’s Eve and new year for the running club.
Club chairperson Mpho Makhado said Raseruthe was laid to rest on January 7, in his hometown of Bochum in Polokwane, Limpopo.

The late Lucas Morongoa Raseruthe, who was a long-serving member of the Waterfall City Athletic Club, was laid to rest in his hometown of Bochum.

Makhado said some of the members attended his funeral. He said upon hearing of his passing, they decided to hold a memorial run to honour Rassie as a loyal member of the club and to bring members together to show the same camaraderie that he showed to his fellow club mates.
A 10km memorial run was held on January 5 and was graced by other runners from other clubs around Midrand and the surrounding areas.

“Rassie fell sick early last year (2022) and through the efforts of his family, friends and the Waterfall City Athletics Club. He was hospitalised in September at the Tembisa Hospital where he stayed admitted until the family informed the club of his passing on December 29,” said Makhado.

Elites runners club manager Kenneth Lethole address the mourners. He is the one who rushed the late runner to the hospital to get him examined and admitted.

Thanking those who attended, the club posted on their Facebook page, “Thank you to everyone who pitched and made this a beautiful memorial run in honour of our brother Rassie. It was a great turnout from the running community. This is a sign of the spirit of love, caring and community that we have in the greater running community. May your soul rest in peace Rassie.”
