Sanca Midrand wary recovered drug addicts may relapse

Makhadi said their low point was falling short and being unable to assist local schools that struggle with bullying.

Sanca Midrand says their 2022 highlight was being able to expand and roll out Ke Moja [I am fine with drugs] initiative and reaching as many communities as possible.

Ke Moja coordinator Andisani Makhadi said they have done this by having ongoing visibility campaigns in the various areas around Midrand. She said as the festive season is in full swing, they were concerned about seeing recovered drug addicts relapse.

Makhadi said their low point was falling short and being unable to assist local schools that struggle with bullying. “To outsource the help they need is always difficult as there are not many programmes that address this problem. Another would be seeing service users relapse and some quit the programme,” said Makhadi.
“With regards to the initiative, I would say it has been a great success with the current rejuvenation programmes like the gig truck, Ke Moja alternatives (talent-based), and other initiatives. With regards to Ke Moja, it has managed to reach different people of all ages, as we aimed to combat substance abuse through talent nurturing.”

Makhadi urged families who live with addicts that it is never late to seek help for their loved ones, as addiction is the biggest psychological war individuals go through, but drug abuse was not the solution.

“My message to the team would be the words of Mahatma Gandhi, ‘be the change you wish to see around you’ by being an ambassador for such a programme. It is not easy because you are all within your youth stages, however, you have been exceptional examples to our youth. Your hard work, commitment, dedication and support have been our strength to reach greater heights. We will keep on changing the world by just taking it one day at a time.”
