Novalis House in Blue Hills invites people with intellectual disabilities

The Novalis House is expected to celebrate a huge milestone following the completion of its Workshop Building programme for 2022.

The workshop building is scheduled for an official opening on December 9 at the Annual Year-End Function.
The social worker at Novalis, Lennon Chikumbirike said the workshop building will enable them to expand the number of beneficiaries who can attend our programme.

He said the programme was able to accommodate 100 people and has an adequate storage area for the contract work. The new workshop building is just what we need.
“We are now ready to take on more workshop attendees and to take on more work contracts from companies willing to support us. The proceeds from the contract work go a long way to partially subsidise the increasingly rising costs of running the centre,” said Chikumbirike.

He said their work enables programme beneficiaries to positively contribute to the country’s economy, thus living to the true meaning of the adage, “disability does not mean inability.”
Chikumbirike said their workshop attendees take pride in their work and become very anxious whenever they see a dwindling supply of work.

“We, therefore, appeal to companies with simple repetitive or similar work that our youth and adults with intellectual disabilities can do, to consider us for such work in 2023. We assure you- our residents and day workshop attendees will do your work with diligence. We also have systems in place to ensure that quality work is produced.”

Chikumbirike urged parents and guardians of youth and adults with intellectual disabilities in communities surrounding Midrand and beyond to consider them as they look for placement of their loved ones.
