Local entrepreneur established a brand out of a passion for fashion

The brand aims to be a well-known brand in leather accessories, including shoes, bags, belts, hats, and beaded jewelry.

Local businesses improve the economic well-being of local communities by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and promoting economic development.

This is what Bobo Moko (31) a Midrand-based fashion entrepreneur is doing for Midrand and surrounding communities.

Moko started Moko Design House with two of his friends, Ndumiso Dube and Pontsho Ramoshaba, in 2012. Aside from the idea of promoting economic development in the community, the trio partnership came about from an ambitious dream and the desire to succeed in the fashion industry.

Moko has always been passionate about fashion and the birth of Moko Design House was enough platform for him to showcase his design talent. “We started the business to design and make afropolitan accessories that are not accessible anywhere else but through us,” said Moko.

In 2016, Dube and Ramoshaba left the brand and Moko continued running it, knowing that a community with successful small businesses inspires others to take that leap and develop their own passion. “It is very important to create your own business and be able to create employment. Youth should also learn that with growth come a lot of challenges, so with scaling up a business you have to adapt to demand, and the tools needed to grow the business.”

Due to the difficulty of staying relevant, small businesses must constantly add new products to their shelves and provide their customers with new benefits. Remaining relevance is not a struggle for Moko since fashion evolves from time to time and he says new products also spark healthy competition with their larger competitors. “Additionally, the competition encourages small businesses to innovate, bringing unique spins to what they offer to keep customers returning. The products you’ll see at a small business are usually ever-changing in order for them to keep up with current demand,” Moko explained.

Moko Design House has an online store. www.mokooriginals.co.za and its physical shop is at the Mall of Tembisa.

The brand strives to be a well-recognised brand in leather accessories such as shoes, bags, belts, hats, and beaded jewellery as their specialty.
