Pikitup clears alleged garbage collection woes in Summerset Estate

Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi urges residents to use designated sites to dispose of their garden waste.

There is nothing frustrating like seeing your garbage ‘intentionally’ left behind by refuse collection employees.

And for the three Tuesdays from August 23 to September 6, that’s what a Summerset Estate resident, Bridget Theunissen has allegedly been experiencing.

Theunissen claimed that Pikitup workers have not collected her garden garbage, including that of three other houses in the estate.

Speaking to Midrand Reporter on September 7, she said, “I have always put some garden stuff in my bin with my households stuff from the time they said we could now put in garden greens. Now, they empty the bin but leave the garden garbage [grass and leaves] behind.”

She further accused the waste collection entity workers of missing collection day – which she said was on a Tuesday – adding that sometimes they would collect it either on Wednesdays or Thursdays.

However, despite the allegations of non-collection for the previous three weeks, Pikitup spokesperson Muzi Mkhwanazi said according to the Midrand depot operational records, there is no backlog in terms of waste collection in the area [Summerset Estate].

Bridget Theunissen’s garbage bin was collected on September 13.

“In relation to garden waste, residents are advised to dispose [thereof at] garden sites or what we currently refer to as integrated waste management facilities where garden waste and other recyclable materials are disposed of. The rationale behind this is to preserve the existing landfill airspace and inculcate a culture of recycling,” said Mkhwanazi.

Mkhwanazi said residents can use the following garden sites in the Midrand area:

  • Falcon Street
  • Cedar Road
  • Dale Road
  • Spreeu Street
  • Strandloper Road
  • Tuinfluister.

Theunissen confirmed that her garden waste was indeed removed from her bin on Tuesday, September 13.
