Midrand Cricket Club’s two U11 cricketers participate in Gauteng’s prestigious cricket tournament

The two young cricketers accounted themselves well amongst stiff competition.

The Lenasia Premier League is one of Gauteng’s most prestigious annual cricket tournaments and pits the finest players of all age groups across the province against each other.

Every year, the tournaments’ eight franchises search out the best cricketers across Gauteng as they all vie for honours.

This year, two local boys of the Midrand Cricket Club were selected to participate in the U11 age group. It was the first time that players from the club made the selection for the tournament.
Sanjay Wengat and Yashvasin Bolishetty were selected to represent the Cavalier Cats and Celestial Knights respectively and the youngsters accounted themselves well among stiff competition.

Sanjay’s side, the Cats, made it to the final against Bank All-Stars. The All-Stars won the toss and elected to bat and Sanjay bowled the first over to set the tone for his team. The young man did not disappoint, completing his two overs for seven runs and laying the platform for the rest of the attack.
All-Stars set an imposing total of 149 in 16 overs and with the daunting task of having to score at over nine runs to the over, the Cats needed a good start. However, the Cats soon found themselves in trouble at 16/4.

The team would not go down without a fight as they took the game deep but ultimately fell agonisingly short by 16 runs. There was to be no silverware for the Midrand boys but there was a consolation as Sanjay walked away as the leading wicket-taker with 18 wickets at a run rate of 2.9 per over.

The club’s juniors coordinator Rajesh Waran expressed their delight in achieving this feat. “Coming on the back of the club being promoted to the Easterns Premier league, this achievement was the cherry on top.

“The club has worked hard in climbing the ranks on the senior side and at the same time not overlooking building up solid structures on the junior side. For the last two years, our juniors have been playing cricket all year round, and it is starting to yield results,” said Waran.

The club’s juniors coach Ryan Maps-Munyama was full of praise for the young men and said, “It is truly pleasing to see our boys playing at such high levels of cricket, it is a testament to the work being put in by our coaches. There is great cricketing talent in Midrand and we are happy to see it starting to surface and get the recognition it deserves.”

The juniors are now busy with their pre-season preparations ahead of the league season starting in October and T20 tournaments starting towards the end of October.
