Noordwyk Primary School learners take part in district competition

Three Grade 7 learners from Noordwyk Primary School, Zeldio Melembe, Ruvarashe Kazuru and Amor Garnie, recently participated in the district science competition.

After doing well in an inter-class competition, three Noordwyk Primary School learners advanced to the Johannesburg East District Social Science Olympiad.

Zeldio Melembe, Ruvarashe Kazuru and Amor Garnie – all Grade 7 learners and 13 years old – were given participation certificates after seeing their journey come to an end in the Olympiad.

The young learners had been tasked with writing a test on social science.

Noordwyk Primary School principal Lynelle Eloff said the Olympiad was held yearly and learners competed against each other at the school level and the best three were selected to compete in the district competitions.

“They competed at the district level but did not move forward to the next round. It is of utmost importance for learners to be able to compete, expand and experience their new skills and confidence in a subject that they are performing in,” said Eloff.
“[The school] is extremely proud of all our learners taking part and to the three that went on to participate in the district competition.”

She said it was important to have learners introduced to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Eloff concluded that they hoped to have more learners participating in the competition next year and hopefully some of them would progress to the provincial stage.
