Two ATMs bombed at an R55 petrol station and undisclosed cash taken

It is third-time unlucky for a petrol garage on corner R55 and Summit Road after two ATM's were bombed in the wee hours of August 9.

Several suspects walked away with an undisclosed amount of cash after bombing two ATMs at a petrol station at the intersection of the R55 and Summit Road.

According to Sector 3 Crime Forum chairperson Marvin Maphiri, this occurred in the early hours of Women’s Day (August 9) at about 00:45.

He said the suspects were allegedly heavily armed and were driving in a white Toyota Quantum and BMW.

“It is the third time this year that this particular service station has been under attack by armed robbers, beefing up security measures in Midrand is a must. We cannot afford to live in an area which is constantly under attack by scumbags,” said Maphiri.

He said police, Metro police and several security companies responded to the scene, however, the perpetrators were long gone.

Police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said the acting station commander of the Midrand police Colonel Hosea Mantji condemned such acts of criminality and called for an urgent meeting between stakeholders to discuss measures to intensify security at these sites.

He said a case of ATM bombing had been opened and handed over to the respective unit for investigation.

“Since this is not the first time the filling station has been attacked, crime prevention authorities will be deployed to monitor all filling stations and we advise that the manager and supervisor should have a panic button that does not [alert the] criminals,” said Mabulane.
