JRA promises quality bridge and road repairs for Midrand Industrial Park in the 2022/23 financial year

Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Kelebogile Mafa says low-cost maintenance will be a thing of the past in the 2022/2023 financial year as it comes back to haunt them.

The crumbling roads in Midrand Industrial Park require more than a quick fix.

This was according to Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) spokesperson Kelebogile Mafa when asked about the maintenance of the roads in the business park including the collapsed bridge on Mastiff Road.

“If JRA rushes to fix these roads via normal maintenance activities [deep patching/periodic maintenance], this may likely amount to fruitless and wasteful expenditure as the holding measures will unravel prior to the period of time anticipated,” said Mafa.
Mafa added the lack of maintenance on the Mastiff Road bridge had resulted in its current state of disrepair.

She said plans to revamp the bridge were in place although she did not say how much it would cost and when exactly the work would commence.

Manager of the industrial park Shaun Wilson said, “The roads have not been designed to keep up with heavy loads that are transported in the park… When it rains, potholes resurface which shows poor repairs and maintenance.”

The park houses a number of businesses that use the road to transfer heavy-duty goods such as building supplies and machinery.

He said more than 3 000 vehicles entered and exited the park daily of which 60% were heavy hauliers, transport trucks, and cement mixing trucks.
