Midrand Police and JMPD walk against drug abuse, human trafficking and GBV

Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane believes the series of awareness campaigns are yielding positive results in a bid to fight the scourge of GBV, human trafficking and substance misuse.

Midrand Police Station, in partnership with Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) and the Christ Embassy Church, walked about 4km against drug abuse, human trafficking and gender-based violence (GBV).

About 150 people from all walks of life formed part in educating and fighting the three scourges that hav engulfed the Midrand community. The walk from Gallagher Corner on Richards Drive to Carslwald Lifestyle Centre started at 9:30 on July 30.

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane said it was important to have the walk as the aim was to ensure a drug-free city. “Door-to-door educational talk campaigns were conducted to address and curb such crimes including trading of drugs. Addicted people were offered help for rehab and to surrender their lives to God for a good change in society,” said Mabulane.

He said many people stay in abusive relationships. The talks encourage everybody – not just women but men too – to report cases of GBV.

“We understand that some crimes within the area are committed by drug addicts who are trying to satisfy their addiction habits by getting ‘quick cash’ by mugging people, street robberies.”

Mabulane believes the station’s series of awareness campaigns are yielding positive results in the bid to fight the scourge of GBV, human trafficking and substance misuse. It has previously been held at Midrand taxi rank, and recently at Noordwyk’s San Ridge Square on July 14.
