The local children’s home plans to make Mandela Day a special one for the vulnerable

The New Jerusalem Children's Home invites companies and individuals to join them in celebrating Mandela Day this year.

Globally, the Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in a dramatic loss of human life and poses a huge challenge to public health, food systems, orphanages and society at large.

New Jerusalem Children’s Home is one of the numerous care facilities in President Park that was severely affected by the pandemic, as it lost its donors whose pockets had been dried due to the pandemic’.

The centre caters to the needs and well-being of vulnerable, abused, traumatised, and orphaned children and youth. The centre was founded in 2000 by Advocate Anna Difo, a businesswoman and community developer, and her sister Phina Mojapelo, a social worker who is extremely experienced in working with children in need. Today, the centre employs 35 people including social workers, caregivers, administrative personnel, cleaners, gardeners and drivers.

Member of the organisation, Keitumetse Ngobeni, said that statutory social workers refer children to the center so it can offer them residential, spiritual, educational and social services. “We have cared for over 1 000 children over the years and currently have 108 children in our care, their ages range from eight months to 19 years,” said Ngobeni.

As Covid-19 restrictions have been eased, the organisation invites companies and individuals to join them in celebrating Mandela Day this year. “Since so many companies were affected by the pandemic, donations have not been as plentiful as before. We are hoping that things will smooth out by this year and that there will be more donations and help,” said Difo.

Companies or individuals will receive a tax benefit certificate for their donations.

Those who would like to celebrate Mandela Day with the children and staff of New Jerusalem can send an email to info@njch.org.za or call the organisation on 010 224 0460
