Local model fancies the Mr SA title

19 years after he left the modelling industry, the Mr South Africa official page popped up on his Instagram timeline and that sent him down memory lane.

The Mr South Africa pageantry platform does not seek ordinary fashion models anymore, but real-life everyday heroes.

In essence, the platform seeks to find the best male ambassador for the country, one who the younger generation can look up to.
And Lwazi Radebe from Noordwyk believes he could be that man as he is among this year’s contestants for Mr South Africa 2022.

Born in Bizana in the Eastern Cape, Radebe has always had a passion for modelling and has won awards in the industry since he was a teenager.

“I used to do a little modelling when I was younger and one of my teachers from Qobo Junior Secondary School organised school pageants and she came to my grandmother’s house and made me participate,” said Radebe.

Thereafter, he started to enter various pageants, including Mr Bizana, and won many accolades. He then moved to Durban where he modelled for various fashion designers before quitting the modelling industry.

After about 19 years out of the industry, the Mr South Africa official page popped up on his Instagram timeline and that sent him down memory lane.

“Previously, I was unaware of Mr South Africa’s pageant. However, what caught my attention on the pop-up was seeing that the organisation does not seek high-end models, as it was evident from last year’s competitors and the year before.

“I then checked the organisation’s values and what they stand for and it resonated with me, and I remember saying to myself ‘I am going to enter for Mr SA 2022, and going to win it.”

The father of two said the reason he entered for the pageant was that he wanted to inspire boys, especially those boys from the villages who have no idea what the world holds for them.

“I want to introduce them [boys] to their career paths, for them to experience life outside of the village, and also find solutions to the issue of absent fathers.”
