Various schools converge at Noordwyk Secondary for career expo

The June 16 career expo held at the Noordwyk Secondary School included speakers from different fields such as aviation, law and finance industry among others.

Noordwyk Secondary School teacher Martha Kgatle believes career expos are critical.

Learners from Midrand High, Mqhele High, Maphutha Secondary, Diesploot Secondary and El-Shaddai Christian schools attended Noordwyk Secondary School’s expo on June 16.

Kgatle, who is also a school-based support team coordinator, explained that career expos help learners to make informed decisions about future career paths.

She shared that there is a worrying trend where learners are uncertain of which career paths they want to explore and then change subject streams while in Grade 12. “The expo exposes our learners to different higher education institutions and courses they are offering. It is important for the learner to discover themselves and be able to make informed decisions about their future based on their strengths and weakness,” said Kgatle.

Kgatle urged all Grade 12 learners to work hard in order to get the right APS score.

The expo was organised by the ANC Liliesleaf Farm Branch in Ward 112. Party secretary Nozuko Yawa said they wanted to commemorate Youth Day differently – and not as a day of indulging in drugs and alcohol.

“We invited experienced people who are in various fields to talk about their journey. We invited different fields ranging from law, aviation, financial, and economics so that we give the learners a first-hand experience,” said Yawa.

She urged all the learners to start thinking about their future before it is too late and use all the relevant information at their disposal.
