Local school netball players participate in mini-netball

When Christ Church Preparatory School and College was founded in 1997, one of the first sports on offer was netball.

Once the first parking lot had been tarred at the school and netball court lines had been painted on the tar, the girls could play on a firm surface rather than the open field they had started on.

In those early years, learners had to move the netball posts on and off the court as needed.

Fast forward and it was a momentous occasion for the school when the new courts were opened at the current sports complex and learners no longer had to share the parents’ parking lot.

The young girls are nurtured and coached by the school deputy principal, Lisle Twaddle and on June 7 the school hosted a mini-netball match for their Grade 2 learners against prep learners of Pinnacle College Copperleaf.

The learners had great fun while also learning more about the game of netball during the four games played.

Dawn Schmitz, Christ Church marketing manager said although scores were not officially recorded, the Christ Church players scored a number of goals.

It is the school’s aim to develop netball players of all skill levels, to become the best version of themselves on the netball court.

Christ Church focuses on the holistic development of players from U9 mini-netball, all the way up to the U18 seniors.

Janine Lock, head of netball at the school said netball had always been a firm favourite among the girls. “The Grade 2 learners enjoy the excitement of mini-tournaments as they learn to play the game, and coaches thrive on seeing the young up-and-coming players discover the thrill of matches and getting the ball through the hoop to score goals.”

Moreover, the school is looking forward to bringing in professional coaches to develop netball even further and increase the opportunities for learners to climb higher on the ladder of success in the world of sports.
