Motorists warned of bogus cops in various roads around Midrand

Brigadier Molefi Tsotsotso of the Midrand police has tasked an intelligence team to probe and trace bogus cops following an increase in hijacking cases.

Allandale Road on-ramp and off-ramp in Midrand are the spots that bogus cops are targeting.

This according to Midrand police spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane who said said other roads included the N1, New Road, Le Roux Avenue and the R55.

Mabulane advised residents to be aware of bogus cops operating in the area. “This comes after several victims opened hijacking cases at the Midrand Police Station alleging that they have been stopped by ‘police’ who robbed them. Victims mentioned the same modus operandi by suspects during these hijackings in which they use flashing blue lights pretending to be police,” said Mabulane.

He said the bogus cops drove around in an unmarked white Polo Vivo, Nissan Almera and a double cab bakkie.

Mabulane added that after victims had been hijacked, they would be dispossessed of their personal belongings and dropped off at different locations around Johannesburg.

Midrand Police Station Commander Brigadier Molefi David Tsotsotso said, “Motorists need to be extra careful of who stops them and if they don’t feel safe, it’s best not to [stop] but instead drive to a shopping complex where there is lot of people. Always make sure that your windows are fully closed including the sunroof.”

He added he had tasked a team to trace these bogus cops.
