Midrand SPCA kept its promise and visited the coal yard

The SPCA will be continuing these outreach efforts since many hours, resources, and education will be needed.

Following the article, Horses cause a jam [Week ending May 20], Midrand SPCA along with farrier Dion Boardman and veterinarian Dr Edward Evans visited the coal yard where the horses are kept on May 7.

After the horses were seen eating garbage and causing a traffic jam on the busy Olifantsfontein Road, the SPCA promised that it would visit the owners of the horses and educate them on how to care for the animals.

SPCA inspector Jerry Seemise and general manager Pam Pretorius along with Boardman and Evans determined that there were 25 working horses there although some were not present. The team checked on the condition of the animals, their shoeing, and the tack and equipment used.

“The animals viewed were mostly in a good condition and their owners do their own shoeing which does need some guidance and assistance in doing this in the correct method,” said the SPCA in a statement.

This would be an ongoing outreach project by the SPCA as a lot of time, education, and resources would be needed.

Boardman has committed to continue this project with the SPCA to teach the owners how to do the shoeing correctly and where veterinary input is required. Evans will be assisting too.

“The truth be told though is that our SPCA cannot go at this alone. There is a great need for proper tack including bridles, bits, and horseshoes,” concluded the SPCA.

If anyone is able to assist the SPCA and adopt this project with them, and help bring about some positive change to the coal yard horses and their owners, they are encouraged to contact Pam Pretorius.
