Career expo aimed to give learners a clear career path

Noordwyk Seconday School deputy principal Frans Selepe said it was critical the learners start planning now if they are to attain the right admission point score and work on getting bursaries.

In a bid to ensure right career choices for their Grade 12 learners, Noordwyk Secondary school school held a career expo.

About 10 higher education institutions made their presentation to the learners on April 29 at the school sport grounds.

In a scorching sun, over 100 learners held their umbrellas high while paying attention to various speakers who had to try lure them into their institution next year.

Deputy principal Frans Selepe said he believes the career expo was much needed because more often learners do not know what they want to study post-Grade 12.

“In order to further their [learners] studies, they must know that universities is a different ball game. So this expo will help them make comprehensive research to determine which career choice they want, what the requirements of studying at that university or college, and the expense of the course of their choice,” said Selepe.

He said it was critical that they start planning now if they are to attain the right admission point score and work on getting bursaries.

RCL president and a Grade 12 learner Vhutshilo Makhado said the day was insightful as they learned more about the pressures of higher learning and facing the real world on their own.

Asked how they planned the day with his RCL committee, he said this was because of his confusion of whether furthering his studies in engineering or health.

“If we get an insight now, then we will apply in time. This will also help us send all required documents before the closing dates in different institutions to avoid dispaoonts or process of undergoing late application. I am happy about the outcome of the day and most of my peers have all the information from the institutions available here”.

Last year the school’s average Grade 12 pass rate went up to 95.6% compared to 93% in 2020.
