Old friends want to revive deep house music

KYALAMI — The duo's music and entertainment experience dates back to 2006, when they both enrolled at different music schools to formally learn the art of becoming professional deejays.

After being co-deejays for more than a decade, two Kyalami-based DJs wants to revive deep house music and strengthen their friendship.

The childhood friends, Dumisani Mahlangu (35) and Fortune Skosana (36), affectionately known as Advocates of Deep (AOD) said they wanted to remain consistent to their style of music.

Mahlangu said their aim was to expand the AOD brand following the official release of their debut single Uyathetha featuring talented vocalist Russell Zuma on February 26.111

“We had planned to release another single in March but our yearly plans spanned over three months from our first release. Therefore, we will not be releasing any single now until after May or June. However, we are monitoring the feedback of our single titled Uyathetha and the response has been phenomenal from our followers and deep house music fraternity,” added Mahlangu.

The title Uyathetha is a Xhosa phrase that can be loosely translated to ‘you talk or shout a lot. The song is aimed at addressing the difficulties that come with a lack of disrespect in a relationship.

After completing their studies, the duo reunited to pursue careers in what they referred to as their ‘first love’.

Skosana added that they were excited about the release of their first single and promised their followers a music video of the single before the end of March.

“Given what we have been able to produce with our first official single, one can’t help but imagine what will be next from us. We are planning to release two more singles prior to dropping inaugural extended play but those details will be shared when the time is right,” said Skosana.

The two said they grew up listening to the likes of DJ Christos, Vinny Da Vinci, Soul Candi and Little Louie Vega.
