Food For Life writes about 2021

MIDRAND – Food For Life Midrand's Vinesh Maharaj reflects on the year.

Food For Life Midrand’s Vinesh Maharaj writes:

Our organisation provides free nutritious meals and food hampers to the needy in Midrand and surrounding areas. We want to create a hunger-free nation, which, in turn, will lead to a more equitable society in the long term.

Highlights of 2021 include serving over 1 million meals this year against our target of 400 000 meals. We supplied 38 tons of food to KwaZulu-Natal for the July Riots relief and more 3 000 20kg hampers were handed out during the year.

Challenges we have faced in 2021: Funding always remains a challenge as the need for food, particularly during the Covid pandemic, has increased dramatically. This is a double whammy, as there are fewer donors and more needy individuals.

A hero for your organisation is the late Satyaki Das who was a tireless volunteer for many years and kept the operations [running] smoothly until his untimely death in July 2021. He single-handedly cooked 200 000 meals last year in lockdown.
Our wish list for the festive season is that everyone is safe and healthy during the fourth wave and the holiday season.
