City appeals to entrepreneurs to run their businesses within required regulations

Food trailer owners stick by rules…Read more here

Owning and operating a food trailer appears to be a popular business and provides income for many entrepreneurs in Midrand but certification and hygiene requirements must be met.

Assistant director, citizen relationship manager for Region A, Pierre Nel, said City of Johannesburg environmental health practitioners were responsible to enforce the hygiene and by-law requirements of these food trailers.

Nel said, “All food trailers must be in possession of a valid Certificate of Acceptability, the trailer must be in possession of a valid licence disk with a registration number, and is allowed to trade anywhere within the City of Johannesburg boundaries, subject to complying with the street trading by-laws.”

Nel said Metro police were responsible to enforce the by-laws and approve locations where traders may trade, normally within reachable distance of public toilet facilities.

“So far, no certificate of acceptability for food trailers has been withdrawn [in Midrand]. Research and food samples in the past have proved that good hygiene standards are kept by the hawkers.”
