Police plead with people to understand the law regulating cannabis

MIDRAND – Midrand Police Station spokesperson Constable Eliot Mabulane warned local youth about the dangers of drugs.

Two suspects were arrested for possession of dagga on September 21 at the Halfway House Taxi Rank in Midrand.

According to Midrand Police Station’s spokesperson, Constable Eliot Mabulane, the two men were arrested on separate occasions when police conducted their day-to-day operation to address trio crimes. “This should send a stern message to those that deal with illegal drugs. Many South Africans continue to stay negligent by disobeying the acts and legislation meant to regulate the use of weed, even though arrests remain imminent.”

Mabulane stressed that although the use of dagga was legalised – for private use in private spaces, for people above the age of 18 – there were still limitations. “The worst part is that the drug lords are selling to the students, destroying their futures. As police, we will not sit back and watch. Instead, we will act and bring them to book.”

Mabulane said the youth should learn to say no to drugs because they affect them negatively. “You will start with cigarettes, then move on to do dagga, then graduate to cocaine, ecstasy, and rock – which is one of the well-known drugs, and once you are in, it won’t be easy to go back.”

He concluded by warning local youth that drug withdrawals were painful. “Let’s join hands together and say no to drug abuse and protects ourselves.”
